Confessions of a 1st Year Principal

I suggest two ways to handle the
distracting information. The first way
is to ignore whatever information is
gathered, disseminated or divulged.
This could work, but remember, “ cancer
spreads if not nipped in the bud!”
The second way is to go get yourself
a cup of coffee, even if your not a coffee
drinker. This totally disrupts the flow
of nonsense spread at the stirring pot.
You won’t have to get coffee everyday,
but the fact that you will enter this
sacred space will prompt the frequenters
to quickly get their serving and then
get on to “on task” agendas.
One thing you will learn quickly,
your presence at certain “hot spots” in
your building will either be welcomed or
unwanted. This simple building routine
will encourage your staff to stay on
task. Additionally, you want to create
a culture of focusing on agenda items
within your schools control. Situations
that arise outside of your building and
above your pay grade are not focal points
of your or your schools agenda. Either
way, its in your favor to always be
unpredictable. Cream or Sugar anyone?
